Erbil is the capital of Iraq’s Erbil Governorate, near Mosul. One of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the world, the city was founded before 2300 BC by the Sumerians, who called it Urbillum. It lays in the plain which called ERBIL plain, and about 414m over sea level. It built over an artificial hill surrounded by an old castle. Because of its strategically position it was coveted object for others, and the greater battle was between Persian king (DARA) and greater Alexander (331 B.C). The castle has two doors, door in the north and the other in the south. Erbil has been visited by many geographers and explorers from Greeks, Arabs and Europeans and they wrote a lot of this city. Most of Erbil's people are KURDS, their language is KURDISH, and their religion is ISLAM. Because of its location on the caravan route between Baghdad and Mosul, Erbil has long been an important commercial center. |
